China Key To 'Beyond' Box Office

Trek film expected to open at $48-60 million

It has been a tough summer for movies so far, but there is some hope that it all could turn around in the next few weeks with the release of films like the all-female "Ghostbusters" reboot, as well as the film that's at least heavily anticipated among people just like you, "Star Trek: Beyond." But how much could "Beyond" make on its opening weekend? Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro predicts it will be somewhere in the range of $48 million and $60 million. "While that's not a July record by any means, 'Star Trek: Beyond' is bound to be one of the more notable openings out of ...

'Sledgehammer' draws nearly 500,000 views in just a few hours

There weren't a lot of scenes from "Star Trek: Beyond" in the new music video from pop superstar Rihanna, but she sure gave the USS Enterprise a beautiful swan song with the release of "Sledgehammer."In the video, Rihanna takes on her own alien look, complete with the ability to move sand and even lift large rocks in a distance, before turning herself into a celestial body that meets face-to-face with the Enterprise.Rihanna, who says she has been a Star Trek fan since she was a little girl, marked the first time that a Star Trek movie wil ...

CBS, Paramount Release Much-Anticipated Fan-Film Guidelines

Studios say it will return productions 'back to their roots'

In the wake of its copyright infringement lawsuit against an "independent" fan-film, CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures for the first time have released fan-film guidelines. And they are expected to drastically change how fan-films move forward. "Your support, enthusiasm and passion are the reasons that Star Trek has flourished for five decades, and will continue long into the future," the studios said in a statement at StarTrek.com. "You are the reason the original ...

Anton Yelchin Dead At 27

Chekov actor involved in freak accident at home

The Star Trek community is mourning the death Sunday of Anton Yelchin, the child actor who grew up to entertain fans as Pavel Chekov in three Trek movies. He was killed early Sunday morning at his home. Yelchin was 27. The actor, according to TMZ, was supposed to meet friends Saturday evening for rehearsal, but didn't show up. The friends later traveled to his house to check on Yelchin, finding him pinned by his running car against a brick mailbox. The car was in neutral, and authorities were unclear why he got out of the car. Police do not suspect foul play, according t ...

TMNT Struggles, Adds Pressure To 'Beyond'

Can the Enterprise rescue Paramount from a disastrous year?

Paramount Pictures focused more on quality rather than quantity for the summer blockbuster season. But it might have settled more for just lower quantity. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" struggled at the North American box office over the weekend, barely beating out "X-Men: Apocalypse" on its second week, and delivering some serious bad news to the executive offices of Viacom chair Philippe Dauman. The sequel from producer Michael Bay earned just $35.3 million domestically on its opening weekend, and $69.3 million worldwide. It slipped past "Apocalypse," whi ...

Coming Soon: 'Lost: Hurley's Star Wars Script'

What would Paramount just dropping the Axanar lawsuit really mean?

I have a big announcement I want to share, and I've been so excited about it, I don't know how I've kept the lid on it for this long. But I have planned a huge crowdfunding campaign, beginning tomorrow, for "Lost: Hurley's Star Wars Script." If you remember back in Season 5 of "Lost," one of my favorite characters of the show, Hurley (played by Jorge Garcia) was thrown back into the 1970s with some of his other island castaways. And while there, he was actually trying to write a better Star Wars script than what Lucas would eventually do — working to make some corrections t ...

Abrams: Axanar Lawsuit 'Going Away'

UPDATE: CBS confirms settlement talks, fan-film 'guidelines'

J.J. Abrams might not be pulling the director reins of the Star Trek movie franchise, but it seems his influence might be strong enough to convince at least Paramount Pictures to pull out of a copyright infringement lawsuit against an "independent" fan-film. "There was a fan movie, 'Axanar,' that was getting made," Abrams told fans during a "Star Trek: Beyond" event in Los Angeles Friday night. He was joined on stage by "Beyond" director Justin Lin, who Abrams said was "outraged by this" lawsuit "as a lifetime fan." "And we started talking about it that this was not an appr ...

CBS Teases TV Trek With New Trailer

Not much revealed ... except for a new logo

While fans continue to wait for Paramount Pictures to release a new trailer for "Star Trek: Beyond" this weekend, CBS has jumped ahead with a teaser of its own for its new yet-to-be-titled Star Trek series on CBS All Access. The new trailer is mostly CGI flight through the cosmos, and doesn't reveal much of anything. Except for a new logo and what appears to be a new typeface. It's not clear if this would be the actual typeface for the new series, as fonts and such typically change as a show gets closer to actual production.CB ...
