'Fifty-Year Mission' Explores Trek Many People Missed

First volume of Star Trek's oral history from Mark A. Altman, Edward Gross a fascinating read

In their new book, "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek," co-authors Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman intend to deliver the definitive story of Star Trek, as told by the people who lived it. The book contains excerpts from hundreds of interviews the authors conducted with cast, crew, writers, directors, studio executives and other key people associated with the franchise. Both authors have decades-long relationships with Star Trek and are well-equipped to guide the reader on this journey. "Volume One: The First 25 Years" ...

Leonard Nimoy, Trek's Most Famous Icon, Dies

A long battle with COPD claims the life of the man behind Mr. Spock at age 83

He was a director. An activist. A photographer. Sometimes even a singer. But to the world of Star Trek, he was Mr. Spock. Leonard Nimoy, the man who first brought the green-blooded, pointy-eared Vulcan to life nearly 50 years ago, died Friday. He was 83. Nimoy had been rushed to a California hospital last week with severe chest pains, but was released a short time later. Susan Bay Nimoy confirmed her husband's death with The New York Times, saying he was in end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy revealed his battle with COPD late last year when ...

10 Fresh Trek Authors Named 'Strange New Worlds' Winners

Pocket Books revives popular fan-writing contest after 9-year break

The "Strange New Worlds" anthology Star Trek book from Pocket Books is back, and now readers will know at least the names of the authors they can expect to see when the book is published later this year. Simon & Schuster, the parent company of the long-time Trek book publisher, revived the contest after nearly a nine-year hiatus. The original contest helped Pocket discover popular authors in the past like Dayton Ward, William Leisner and Ilsa J. Bick. Pocket Books hopes to add to that list with these 10 authors: Derek Tyler Attico The Dreamer and the Dream Nei ...

CBS, Paramount Both Plan 50th Anniversary Blu-ray Releases

From television series to movies, fans will have a lot to choose from this summer

In what will likely be more than what a typical Blu-ray player can handle, both CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures are planning major releases this summer, not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, but also to start the buildup for "Star Trek: Beyond" in July. CBS will kick it all off first on June 7 when it releases "megapacks" of both "Star Trek: The Original Series" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" on Blu-ray. Both box sets, which hit store shelves on June 7, are complete series. The original Star trek is 79 episodes on 20 discs in high-de ...

'Animated Series' Among Holiday Blu-ray Trek Offerings

Paramount/CBS also will offer 4K versions of reboot films

It's already been transferred to high-definition, so why not release "Star Trek: The Animated Series" on Blu-ray, right? CBS agrees, and will do just that for Christmas, marking the first time the 22 episodes will be available in such an HD format. The series, which ran between 1973 and 1974, will join films like "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" on Blu-ray as well as both the 2009 "Star Trek" and 2013's "Star Trek: Into Darkness." Of course, for those films, being on Blue-ray is not new. However, The Digital Bits ...

What 'The Clone Wars' Can Teach 'Star Trek'

Can the franchise make a 'Star Wars'-like transition to animation?

On March 7, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" released its sixth and final season onto Netflix, marking the end of the George Lucas era of the Star Wars franchise. Since its first release as an animated feature film in 2008, "The Clone Wars" has consistently proven doubters wrong about whether or not an animated series could be successful in what is primarily a live-action film franchise. There was worry that it would cater too much to kids, which was also a criticism leveled at the Star Wars prequel trilogy, or that it could never live up to the film saga. Not only did it live ...
