Producer confirms MMOers won’t be able to cross-play
Sorry gamers! If you were looking to continue a Star Trek Online mission from your personal computer to your PlayStation 4, you’ll have to think again. Steve Ricossa, the executive producer of the massively multiplayer online game, shared the bad news with gamers soon after his company announced Star Trek Online would be made available for Xbox One and PS4 consoles this fall. One of the biggest questions coming from that announcement was whether “cross-play” would be possible …Tommy Kraft, James Cawley, Christian Gossett among those sharing tough love
Shocking observers, fans — and according to at least four different sources, the studios themselves — “Star Trek: Beyond” producer J.J. Abrams publicly inserted himself into a copyright infringement lawsuit Friday night declaring his support for the fan-film being sued. However, in an effort to defend fan-films, Abrams might have actually riled up many of those very fan-film communities not attached to “Star Trek: Axanar.” “There was a fan movie, ‘Axanar,’ that was getting made …
UPDATE: CBS confirms settlement talks, fan-film ‘guidelines’
J.J. Abrams might not be pulling the director reins of the Star Trek movie franchise, but it seems his influence might be strong enough to convince at least Paramount Pictures to pull out of a copyright infringement lawsuit against an “independent” fan-film. “There was a fan movie, ‘Axanar,’ that was getting made,” Abrams told fans during a “Star Trek: Beyond” event in Los Angeles Friday night. He was joined on stage by “Beyond” director Justin Lin, who Abrams said was “outraged by this” lawsuit “as a lifetime fan.” “And we started talking about it that this was not an appr …Skydance site could be future home of ‘Star Trek 4’
Skydance Media is committing to British Columbia after revealing it’s opening a production office just outside of Vancouver. The company founded by David Ellison six years ago, has helped produce 2013’s “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and the upcoming “Star Trek: Beyond.” Skydance will take over the former printing press building of the Pacific Newspaper Group, according to The Georgia Straight. Pacific Newspaper is owned by Toronto-based Postmedia Network Canada Corp., which publishes The Vancouver Sun. In fact, the Sun was printed at the 170,000-square-foo …PLUS: Simon Pegg says new trailer will show ‘Beyond’s’ Star Trek heart
This story may contain spoilers for “Star Trek: Beyond. Paramount Pictures desperately wanted a film in theaters in time to celebrate Star Trek’s golden anniversary. But after rejecting a script — and ultimately the director — of what had been tentatively called “Star Trek 3,” the studio had to find a way to pull it together, with producer J.J. Abrams hand-picking Justin Lin to do the job. Although Lin has acknowledged his work on “Beyond” as a “rescue mission …A new uniform, claimed leaked screencaps from game, say yes
Star Trek Online may be preparing to do something not even the CBS or Paramount side of Star Trek have done before — cross universe streams. Eliot Lefebve at Massively Overpowered has pointed out a non-player character who has popped up in the online game. And while he’s not key to anything going on in the story, one thing that caught Lefebve’s eye is not what he says (or lacks saying), but instead what he’s wearing. “The tunic is not a single piece, but rather a black undershirt with a colored overshirt,” Lefebve said. …Star Trek is building a bigger connection with the country than ever before
Did you know that Capt. Kirk is Canadian? OK, that’s a bit of a stretch. But William Shatner, who played Capt. Kirk in the original “Star Trek,” is most definitely Canadian, hailing from Montreal. Long before he commanded a Federation starship, Shatner was performing at the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, and appearing on the Canadian “Howdy Doody” show as Ranger Bob. With that connection, Canada is clearly excited to celebrate its connection to Star Trek during the show’s 50th Anniversary with a series of coins, stamps and special exhibits. Shatner was ju …Need to start from the beginning? You can do it right here!

Axanar Productions promoted its makeshift warehouse as “Ares Studios,” but it seems the lawsuit-plagued company is now marketing the converted soundstage as “Valkyrie Studios.” Flyers promoting not just the name but the studio space itself were reportedly distributed at the Sci-Fest L.A. film festival last week, according to a report by AxaMonitor. An image of the flyer was shared on a social media page run by an Axanar crewmember, seeking film groups that might be interested in renting out the space. “Whether you’re looki …Streaming service may be close to announcing second original series
We all knew CBS All Access wasn’t going to stop at a new Star Trek series for its streaming service. in fact, the media company has had its eye on releasing an original series every quarter, to keep subscribers interested in digging out $6 a month to keep it. So what might follow Star Trek after it ends its first season in the spring? Think “The Good Wife.” Or, think more specifically a “Good Wife” spinoff. The popular court drama ended its run on CBS last week after the show’s creators, Robert King and Michelle King, decided they didn’t want to continue as showrunners. The …Director of 1996 animated classic tells ‘Beyond’ helmer not to do it
There seemed to be a little bit of magic everywhere when it came to the 1996 sleeper hit “Space Jam.” It had Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. It had a younger and still quite marketable Michael Jordan. And it included a bunch of NBA legends who just happened to be available. But a planned sequel more than 20 years after the fact will most likely fail to re-capture that magic. At least that’s what “Space Jam” director Joe Pytka is warning “Space Jam 2” director Justin Lin. “When we did ‘Space Jam,’ there was a perfect storm of players and ex-player …Upcoming Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are years in the making
Practically all the major Hollywood movie studios are launching into the next phase of home media with ultra high-definition Blu-ray discs, a format that provides superior picture quality and other enhancements over standard Blu-rays. And Paramount Pictures is jumping into the format with its upcoming UHD releases of 2009’s “Star Trek” and 2013’s “Star Trek: into Darkness.” There’s been a lot of work invested into the new Blu-rays — work that literally started years ago, sa …Adding consoles means massive updates to PC game, too
After six years, Star Trek Online is ready to expand from the PC to the gaming console. Come fall, the massively multiplayer online game will become available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. “Our goal is to deliver the same high-quality Star Trek experience to players on these consoles, with some additional upgrades to make the transition to the console space a smooth and natural experience,” game executive producer Stephen Ricossa said in a release. “Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play, into a game that pl …No-nonsense judge wasting no time in keeping case moving
If and when the producers of “Star Trek: Axanar” go to trial is a lot sooner than both sides anticipated, after the judge in the case rejected a schedule agreed to by both sides, and moved up a court date. CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures will officially begin presenting its copyright infringement case to a California federal court jury Jan. 31, according to an order filed Tuesday by Judge R. Gary Klausner. That’s much sooner than the original proposed trial date of May 9, 2017 — a y …PLUS: Language Creation Society’s Klingon language brief rejected
Lawyers from both sides of a copyright infringement case against an “independent” Star Trek fan-film met in court for the first time Monday. And afterward, one of the defendants in that case was optimistic — even announcing plans to restart production of “Star Trek: Axanar” next year. But Tuesday, Judge R. Gary Klausner dropped a huge hammer on “Axanar,” denying completely the fan-film’s motion to dismiss. Which means the suit filed by CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures against Axanar Productions and its principal, Alec Peters, will move forward at full force. “We should be h …
