Through many films throughout his career, Simon Pegg has had a chance to work with many directors. But none of them have been Steven Spielberg.
Pegg, who plays Scott in the Star Trek films — including this year’s upcoming “Star Trek: Beyond” — is set to appear in the upcoming Spielberg film “Ready Player One.”
Based on the 2011 novel by Ernest Cline, the film focuses on the death of a billionaire some 20 years from now, who decides to distribute his fortune to players of a massively multiplayer online game called “The Oasis.” One of the players, Wade Watts — played by “X-Men: Apocalypse” actor Tye Sheridan — who ends up fighting people in both the real and online world to get the money.
Pegg will play Ogden Morrow, the surviving co-creator of Oasis, who is more like the Steve Wozniak to the Steve Jobs in the dynamic of the game, to use a popular Apple computer analogy. They both will be joined by Olivia Cooke as Samantha Evelyn Cook and Ben Mendelsohn as the villain Nolan Sorrento, in the film.
Cooke plays the love interest of Watts, who also is looking for the game fortune, while Mendelsohn is looking for ways to further monetize the “Oasis” game.
Cooke is best known for her role as Emma Decody in “Bates Motel,” while Mendelsohn plays Danny Rayburn in the popular Netflix series “Bloodline.”
Pegg, who previously appeared in 2009’s “Star Trek” as well as its sequel, “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” appeared last year in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” and is set to voice Buck in the upcoming “Ice Age: Collision Course.”
“Star Trek: Beyond,” which Pegg is a co-writer, premieres July 22.
