‘Beyond’ Trailer Drops On … May 20?

Not a lot of opening weekend choices to attach it to, however

It seems we finally have a date when we can expect the full trailer for “Star Trek: Beyond.” And while we were quite confident the trailer would be attached to “Captain America: Civil War,” it seems instead Paramount Pictures has its eye on … “Angry Birds”?

Entertainment Weekly reporter Gerrad Hall says Paramount will roll out the trailer May 20 in a special event in Los Angeles hosted by the film’s director, Justin Lin. Fans will be invited to the Paramount lot in Hollywood where the cast and crew of the film will debut the trailer. Fans who can’t make it to California also will have a chance to see it on Facebook Live.

“As a lifelong fan of Star Trek, we wanted to do something special for the fans,” Lin told the magazine. “We couldn’t think of a better way to do that than creating an event dedicated to them in the year that we also come together to celebrate the series’ amazing 50th year.”

May 20 is a Friday that also is the opening weekend for films like “Angry Birds,” “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and “The Nice Guys.” None of the films are really in the Star Trek genre, so it’s not clear exactly the audience Paramount is looking to reach.

Last week, 1701News predicted the trailer would drop two weeks before on May 6 when Marvel’s “Civil War” premieres. The audiences attending that opening would likely be interested in a new Star Trek trailer, just like Paramount’s marketing team figured when it debuted the teaser trailer in time for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in December.

“Angry Birds” stars the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny R. McBride, and is based off a smartphone game that was popular half a decade ago. “Neighbors 2” is the comedy sequel to the 2014 outing that stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron.

“Nice Guys” is a crime thriller based in the 1970s starring Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe and Matt Bomer.

But then again, just because Paramount is having a special event to release the trailer online, it doesn’t mean Paramount will exactly make the trailer available that weekend. While it’s unlikely that it would drop early, it is possible that theaters will have a first chance to show the trailer the following weekend, when Twentieth Century Fox debut’s Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which some say could be the summer’s biggest movie.

The biggest problem with waiting one more week to put the trailer in theaters is that May 27 is just 56 days before “Beyond’s” July 22 premiere date. That would be the latest a first full trailer has dropped for a Star Trek film. The full trailer for “Star Trek: Into Darkness” hit theaters 69 days before its release in 2013.

However, this could be a good strategy for Paramount. With so many summer movies fighting for attention this year, already dominated by comic book films, leaving little room for potential ticket-buyers to forget that “Beyond” is coming out might be the smartest move. Then again, it also could mean that Paramount is not expressing the utmost confidence in the film.

We’ll likely have to wait until the first reviews start coming in to be sure.

“Star Trek: Beyond,” written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung and directed by Lin, stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Idris Elba.
