Is Star Trek Online Planning An AbramsVerse Crossover?

A new uniform, claimed leaked screencaps from game, say yes

Star Trek Online may be preparing to do something not even the CBS or Paramount side of Star Trek have done before — cross universe streams.

Eliot Lefebve at Massively Overpowered has pointed out a non-player character who has popped up in the online game. And while he’s not key to anything going on in the story, one thing that caught Lefebve’s eye is not what he says (or lacks saying), but instead what he’s wearing.

“The tunic is not a single piece, but rather a black undershirt with a colored overshirt,” Lefebve said. “The insignia is in silver and is a separate piece from the tunic. Furthermore, the tunic is a ribbed mesh material.”

What Lefebve is trying to say is that this NPC is wearing a Kirk-era uniform. But not the kind we expected for the upcoming time-traveling expansion that will take us back to the original “Star Trek” days. Instead, it’s the one that takes us to a different Kirk era. The one starring Chris Pine, and directed by J.J. Abrams.

“In other words, what we have here is a character who is in completely the wrong universe, but exists in a time period contemporaneous with the exact era that the game’s net expansion is going to be covering,” Lefebve said. “It’s quite possible that he might serve as a not-so-subtle hint about what is coming around the corner, a preview of crossing over with the alternate universe and exploring what that might mean across multiple potential timelines.

“Or he’s just a little Easter egg thrown in there for fans to smile about,” he added. “That could be it.”

And that is possible. However, an anonymous poster in a Reddit area known as Twilight is Awful had temporarily posted some screenshots he claimed were from a planned future expansion of STO. And they feature the Enterprise bridge from the Abrams movies.

1701News was not able to corroborate the photos (which are posted at the bottom of this story) in any way, so it’s just as likely they are not real as it’s likely they are. So take these reported screen captures with a grain of salt. However, someone familiar with this Reddit area and this particular poster says he has provided advance information on STO in the past, and has been correct. These posts were removed a short time after being published, reportedly in fear that Arc Games, which runs the massively multiplayer online game, might take action against the Reddit stream.

STO is not totally alien to the movie universe. The timeline of the game, in fact, takes place after the destruction of Romulus, an event that while taking place in the prime universe that CBS mostly controls, was something told in the Abrams movie, that created the events of 2009’s “Star Trek.”

Is there a much bigger crossover coming? Or is this a bunch of nothing? Arc Games has not yet responded to a 1701News request for comment, so for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
