Sorry gamers! If you were looking to continue a Star Trek Online mission from your personal computer to your PlayStation 4, you’ll have to think again.
Steve Ricossa, the executive producer of the massively multiplayer online game, shared the bad news with gamers soon after his company announced Star Trek Online would be made available for Xbox One and PS4 consoles this fall. One of the biggest questions coming from that announcement was whether “cross-play” would be possible between a PC and a PS4, allowing seamless transition from one point of entry to another.
The answer, however, was a no.
“The PlayStation 4 version of Star Trek Online will play on a different server than the current PC version,” Ricossa told posters on an online Playstation forum. “So all PlayStation captains will be starting fresh.”
Ricossa didn’t address if there would be similar issues for those looking to cross-play with an Xbox One, although it’s likely those players would run into the same problem.
“As we are running a completely new server for PlayStation 4, we want to make sure that all players are able to have equal footing when we launch later this year,” he added.
The expansion to consoles means there is a user interface coming up for players, but will still use a combination of radial menus, Ricossa said. The production team will streamline the head-up display elements of the game, however, so that they will be “easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play.”
“Our goal is to deliver the same high-quality Star Trek experience to players on these consoles, with some additional upgrades to make the transition to the console space a smooth and natural experience,” Ricossa said earlier this month.
