Worf Is Back … Well, In Star Trek: Online

Michael Dorn talks about his return to the famous Klingon

Worf may not be a merry man, as revealed in the episode “Q-Pid,” but “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” star Michael Dorn is happy to be connected to his famous Klingon once again. Especially now that he doesn’t have to wear any of the makeup.

Dorn, 60, is voicing Worf for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Trek: Online. And who knows — maybe this will be the boost Dorn needs to get his proposed Worf Star Trek series off the ground. The character will pick up where he left off in “Star Trek: Nemesis,” with Worf taking on his role as the Klingon ambassador — a tight spot where he may have to decide between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

“Worf has learned he does not have to choose,” Dorn recently told StarTrek.com. “Even if the writers on STO have him making statements to the contrary, I feel he feels that life is a journey, and this is just a stop along the way. And maybe next year, he’ll make a different choice and rejoin the Federation. You never know with Worf.”

Dorn said he had a lot of input in how Klingons would eventually be portrayed, especially when he asked creator Gene Roddenberry to let the character have a controlled rage.

Worf, he said, “was almost running amok without any form or function. I told Gene that I wanted him to be more in control, almost Samurai-like. To his credit, he allowed me to create the whole ‘Klingon Martial Arts’ mystique.”

Dorn had last played the character of Worf in another voiceover role, this time in a 2011 episode of Fox’s animated “Family Guy.” His last official appearance as the character was in 2002’s “Nemesis.”
