‘Star Trek 3’ Closes In On New Director

Five candidates rumored to be favorites for the job

The search for a “Star Trek 3” director appears to be narrowing.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have at least five candidates in mind, according to Deadline.

Last week, Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the script for “Star Trek 3” with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, stepped down from the directing job. Details about what led to his departure remain unclear. The film would have been his directorial debut, so his inexperience may have been a key factor.

Directors now under consideration are:

–Rupert Wyatt, who helmed “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and “The Escapist.” He is reportedly a top candidate.

–Morten Tyldum, who directed “The Imitation Game” and “Headhunters.”

–Daniel Espinosa, who helmed “Safe House” and “Easy Money.” He recently completed work on “Child 44,” which stars Tom Hardy.

–Justin Lin, who directed “Fast & Furious 6” and “Fast Five.”

–Duncan Jones, who helmed the films “Source Code” and “Moon.” He is currently in post-production on the video game-inspired film “Warcraft.”

Also expressing interest in the job is “Star Trek: The Next Generation” actor Jonathan Frakes. No stranger to directing work, he has credits that include 1996’s “Star Trek: First Contact,” “1998’s “Star Trek: Insurrection” and numerous television episodes.

In addition, “Shaun of the Dead” director Edgar Wright had been mentioned early on as a possible helmer, but news of his candidacy has since stalled.

“Star Trek 3” is already in pre-production, prepping for a 2016 release in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
