Justin Lin Takes ‘Star Trek 3’ Helm

UPDATED: Film receives July 8, 2016 release date; ‘Fast & Furious 6’ director steps up to replace Roberto Orci

Justin Lin will direct “Star Trek 3,” according to Deadline.

Having helmed four installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise, Lin takes the reins from J.J. Abrams, who departed to helm Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

“Star Trek 3” is now in pre-production and will open in theaters on July 8, 2016 in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the sequel’s script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, had been positioned for the directing chair, but he stepped down from the job earlier this month. The film would have been his directorial debut. Details about what led to his departure remain unclear.

In addition to film work, Lin has television credits that include directing NBC’s “Community” and CBS’ “Scorpion”; he is also set to direct Season 2 of HBO’s “True Detective,” which stars Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are spearheading “Star Trek 3” with David Ellison, Orci and Abrams set to produce.

The franchise has enjoyed box office success since Abrams directed 2009’s “Star Trek,” which kicked off new tales surrounding a young Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the USS Enterprise. That film earned $380 million worldwide. Abrams also directed its sequel, “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” which took in $467 million worldwide, including $229 million domestically.
