Whoopi Goldberg Making First Ever Trek Con Appearance

Oscar-winning actress heads to Las Vegas for Creation Entertainment event

What does it take to get Whoopi Goldberg to a Star Trek convention? How about a chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary in Las Vegas?

That was enough for the comedian and actress, who has signed up for her first-ever convention at Creation Entertainment's Las Vegas Convention beginning Aug. 3.

"Whoopi is beloved by Star Trek fans for her recurring role as Guinan in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation" and two Star Trek feature films," according to a bio published by Creation. "Appearing at her very first Star Trek convention, audiences worldwide have made Ms. Goldberg one of the most popular talents in show business."

Goldberg has always credited the original "Star Trek" for inspiring her to get into comedy and acting. It was Nichelle Nichols' portrayal of Lt. Uhura that gave Goldberg the confidence she could overcome racial barriers and find equality, in a time period when such equality seemed fleeting. When TNG premiered in the late 1980s, Goldberg pushed to be a part of the series, and the Ten Forward bartender of Guinan was created.

She first appeared in the second season episode "The Child" in 1988, and would be credited for appearances in 27 more episodes, according to Internet Movie Database. Her final episode was "Suspicions" in 1993.

Goldberg would later appear in two films reprising Guinan, both in 1994's "Star Trek: Generations" and 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Both roles were uncredited.

Currently the moderator of "The View" daily talk show, Goldberg has been nominated for nine prime time Emmys and two Oscars, winning her only Academy Award in 1991 for "Ghost." She's also been nominated for 13 daytime Emmys, winning two.

Also scheduled to appear at VegasCon are William Shatner, Kirstie Alley, George Takei, Kate Mulgrew, Nichols, Jeri Ryan, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner and a number of others.

The convention runs through Aug. 7 at The Rio Suites Hotel, but all tickets have been sold out. Fans can learn more details about the convention by clicking here.
